Concordance
is proud to have released the world premiere
recording of Csaba Erdelyi's Restoration and
Orchestration of the Bartok Viola Concerto.
The
Work was left in an uncompleted form when the composer
died in 1945, and for many years the only way in which
the work could be heard was in the completion by
Hungarian Tibor Serly.
But
Bartok experts have worried for years about the value of
the Serly completion, and over the last twenty two
years, since the original pages of Bartok's manuscript
have been available for study, Csaba Erdelyi has
laboured painstakingly to create a version that would do
honour to the composer's memory.
He
has produced, after exhaustive study and consultation, a
number of interim 'completions', and now he has arrived
at his definitive version - the Restoration and
Orchestration 2001. That is what you hear on this
recording. As well, you will hear this world class
violist collaborate with talented conductor Marc Taddei
and the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Berlioz' strangely evocative
symphony - Harold en Italie.
